Amazon is to create 1,000 new permanent roles at its UK fulfilment centres. There are currently 6,000 permanent employees in Amazon fulfilment and customer service centres in the UK. Following previous criticism of the quality of jobs it offers and of the working conditions in its fulfilment centres, Amazon says that its employees ‘now work four ten-hour shifts per week meaning they benefit from three days off every week. Fewer visits to work saves associates both time and money on a weekly basis.’ It also says that permanent employees start on an average of £7.39 per hour and earn up to £8.90 per hour after 24 months, with other benefits including stock grants, private medical insurance, a company pension plan, life assurance, income protection and an employee discount.
